How much limestone gravel do I need?

Crushed limestone is sold by the ton or cubic yard. Work out the volume, then convert:

Cubic yards = length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (ft) ÷ 27. Multiply cubic yards by the density to get tons. Most crushed limestone weighs roughly 1.4 tons per cubic yard (about 2,700 lb).

As a rule of thumb, one ton of crushed limestone covers about 100 square feet at 2 inches deep, or roughly 65 sq ft at 3 inches.

Densities are typical averages; actual weight varies with moisture and quarry. Use them as a close estimate.

Limestone gravel FAQs

How much limestone gravel do I need for a driveway?

Multiply length × width × depth (all in feet) to get cubic feet, divide by 27 for cubic yards, then multiply by about 1.4 for tons. For example, a 40 × 10 ft driveway at 4 inches deep needs about 5.9 cubic yards, or roughly 8.3 tons of #57 limestone (with a 20% compaction allowance).

How many tons are in a cubic yard of crushed limestone?

About 1.4 US tons per cubic yard for #57 and clean ¾″ limestone. Dense-grade (crusher run) and screenings pack tighter at around 1.5 tons per cubic yard.

What is #57 limestone gravel?

#57 is a washed, angular crushed limestone roughly ¾ inch in size with the fines screened out. It drains well and is the most common grade for driveways, drainage, and as a base under pavers or concrete.

How much area does a ton of limestone cover?

About 100 square feet at 2 inches deep, or roughly 65 square feet at 3 inches. One cubic yard (≈1.4 tons) covers about 160 sq ft at 2 inches.

What is the difference between #57 and dense-grade limestone?

#57 is a clean, single-sized stone that drains freely and stays loose. Dense-grade (crusher run / #411) mixes stone with limestone fines so it compacts into a hard, locked surface — better as a base layer, while #57 is better for the drainage or top layer.
