Bags are rounded up to whole bags. Buying in bulk (cubic yards) is usually cheaper than bags for larger beds — always round up and confirm with your supplier.

How much mulch do I need?

Mulch is sold by the cubic yard (bulk) or by the bag. Work out the volume, then convert:

Cubic yards = length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (ft) ÷ 27. A standard bag holds 2 cubic feet, so one cubic yard equals about 13.5 bags of 2 cu ft mulch.

As a rule of thumb, one cubic yard of mulch covers about 100 square feet at 3 inches deep (or about 160 sq ft at 2 inches).

How deep should mulch be?

Topping up existing mulch1 inch
Established beds & around trees2–3 inches

Keep mulch a couple of inches away from plant stems and tree trunks to avoid rot.

Mulch FAQs

How many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?

It depends on bag size. With standard 2 cubic foot bags, one cubic yard is about 13.5 bags (round up to 14). With 1.5 cu ft bags it's 18 bags, and with 3 cu ft bags it's 9 bags.

How much mulch do I need for a 200 square foot bed?

At 3 inches deep, a 200 sq ft bed needs about 1.85 cubic yards — roughly 25 bags of 2 cubic feet. At 2 inches deep it drops to about 1.2 cubic yards (≈17 bags).

How much area does a cubic yard of mulch cover?

About 108 square feet at 3 inches deep, 162 square feet at 2 inches, or 324 square feet spread just 1 inch thick.

How deep should I spread mulch?

2–3 inches is right for most established beds. Go 3–4 inches on new beds to suppress weeds, and just 1 inch when topping up existing mulch.

Is it cheaper to buy mulch in bulk or bags?

For anything over about 1–2 cubic yards, bulk mulch by the cubic yard is usually cheaper per unit than bags, though bags are easier to handle and transport. Enter a price either way above to compare.
